Fear is the Mind Killer
For many of us all around the world, things seem pretty frightening right now. Jobs are being lost without warning, investments have gone up in smoke, bad news is pounding us from every cable news channel, our real estate values are evaporating like smoke; little wonder it is so hard to keep our eyes on the Truth that God is our source of supply and our constant strength and help. As my mother always told me when things looked bad in my life, son, the sun will rise tomorrow morning and you will be alright. We have been here before and we always come out stronger and wiser; this time is no exception.
Back in 1933, President Franklin Roosevelt made his famous speech to the American nation in which he told us that we had nothing to fear but fear itself. He knew that as long as the American people lived in fear and hoarded their money; stopping their spending, that America would never recover from the Great Depression. The Depression did not begin with the Crash of 1929, it took two years of fear and poor government policy to move America from a recession to the Greatest Depression in world history. So it is today. Our fear is literally creating the loss of jobs, the insolvency of banks, the loss of stock values and the bankruptcy of thousands of businesses. We have turned a short term bank crisis into a severe recession stoked by a 24 hour cable news fed drumbeat of bad news. Some folks believe that CNN stands for Constant Negative News!
We must keep in mind that like the lilies of the fields and the birds of the skies, we do not need to give thought to how we shall eat or where we shall live. We do not need to wallow in fear and doubt. We must do our work, keep our hearts strong and our faith robust in the promise that our God have given: that what we need will be given to us - if we believe. We in the Science of Mind way of life do not believe in magical thinking or pie in the sky, but we do know that with our faith, our wise use of the Law and our hard work, any problem becomes an opportunity, any challenge becomes a chance for renewal. We know that what you put into Mind surely becomes your reality. Fear produces lack, struggle and loss. Nothing good comes of mind paralysing fear.
You may hear ministers like me saying these things and you may say: yes, easy for you to say, Rev! You have no wolf at the door, your bills are paid. Do not be so sure, my friend. We who teach God's Truth are not exempt from the laws of economics and hard times are here for us as well. I do not make my living from my teaching, I have a "day job", as some people would say, and times are indeed tough.
Focus on this recession and the fear it engenders; chew on it, let fear take root in your mind, and you surely will face loss and struggle. Think only of things of good report, think of what you want, give no thought to what you fear. Lose your fear in your love and trust in God the Good. God is open 24/7, always there to comfort, give direction, inspire but never to do it for you. That you must do and to get the job done, you have to keep your mind clear, your heart joyful and your thoughts happy so that you can draw to you what you need and want.
Remember, your thoughts and your beliefs are a magnet that draws plenty or lack, love or fear, joy or sorrow to you. As you think, so you are. Is it easy to keep your mind on all that is right in the world when the bill collectors call, the mortgage is late and there are rumors of more layoffs at your job? I would be a fool to tell you that this is easy, but it can and must be done. Succumb to fear and your mind becomes numb, you feel hopeless and can do nothing - then you ARE lost. God cannot work fill a clenched fist or a closed and fearful mind. Fear pulls the plug on the connection with God within you. This is the season to know that you and God are One.
I know that the solution lies in God and in His Law and my wise use of it; not in complaining or living in fear of loss. A life lived in fear, is not a life worth living - let's lift our heads up, straighten our backs and get to work building a new and better world. If we have work and a good income, let's buy that car, purchase that home, take that trip. It's the best buyer's market in 20 years! Each time we do something that we would normally do in good times, we make a statement that we believe, we have faith, we know that "this too shall pass", that our consumption is helping to save jobs, to stop the downward spiral and to get us on the mend.
The government cannot get us out of this recession without our help. John Maynard Keynes and his economics that have never worked notwithstanding, all the government spending in the world will not help to revitalize our consumer based economy unless we CONSUME. We can do this without huge government programs or we can let the government put our grandchildren in a mountain of debt that they will never be able to repay. Certainly the government can help in stabilizing the financial crisis and helping to stem the wave of foreclosures and even begin some job creation projects. But never in history did a government spend us out of a recession or depression and this is no exception.
If we are to come out of this rapidly and without great harm to our nation and world, we must reclaim our courage, become sensibly fearless and get on with life. Our faith in our Good God is the key to giving us the courage and the certain knowledge that we are not alone, that we have the loving arms of the Father to fall back into, that we are the captains of our fate and the masters of our soul.
God gives us the power, the inspiration, the material to do the work, but WE are the builder, WE are the authors, WE are the healers of our lives and our nations and our world- we are the hands and feet of our God. Let's still that voice of "what if" and "how will I" within us and know that we will all be just fine-if we believe. With God as our constant compass and companion, we cannot fail.
Faith is the antidote to fear. Fear is the Mind Killer, God is the answer. Let's talk to our Divine Best Friend tonight and let Him lead us our of fear and into joy, plenty and peace. It is all there for the believing, my dear friends. Know that whether you pray to God, Allah, Rama, The Great Soul or your Higher Power, my words are the Truth of the Most High God.
May whatever concept you have of the Lord of the Universe be with you always.
