Life Is An Inside Job
As I write these messages, I am very aware that my readers are from many cultures in many, many countries around the globe. I know that being an American is to be part of a culture that is very different from the ones that many of you call your own. But I do believe that there is much in the human experience that is universal. I know that all humans have dreams, aspirations and desires for themselves and for their loved ones. It is to empower each one of you to take conscious control of your life; to realize your dreams and achieve all that you are capable of achieving in your life that I dedicate this ministry - this work.
While each of us may conceive of God or our Higher Power in a different way, most of us know that there is something outside of us, a Higher Intelligence that creates and keeps re-creating the Universe and all that is in it. For this Universe and our lives to be a random accident is to believe that life is a Cosmic Lottery - a fools game and that I cannot accept. It has been said that it is as likely that a modern wide body aircraft, such as the Boeing Dreamliner, came into being by a random arrangement of old aircraft parts in a junkyard, as it is that there is no great Mind, no Cosmic Intelligence behind all of Creation.
Now that we have accepted that there is a power greater than our individual mind, we must be very careful not to fall into the belief that we are nothing but pawns on a Cosmic Chessboard on which God plays a constant Cosmic Chess game with our lives; that we merely do "God's Will", whatever that is. I know many, many people who honestly believe that God directs the most minute details of their lives right down to what car they drive, where they live and even what they wear. This is the old "Parent God" belief in which we project our need to have a big Daddy in the Sky direct our every step and make every decision on our behalf. This view is so widespread because it takes all the responsibility off our shoulders and gives it to God. How nice but not true!
No, my friends, we have been given total dominion over our lives. We have free will; we are the producers, directors and script writers of our own little life cinema. God gives us the ability, the power and the intellect to use that power; a set of totally predictable spiritual and physical laws that we may use with a non-revocable license from the Almighty to create whatever Heaven or Hell we wish. Does this magnificent Deity not care what happens to us? The answer is "yes" and "no". Yes, God wants every good thing for us since God has to experience our life with us. But no, God will not and cannot save us from ourselves because to do so is to negate the whole point of our life on Earth.
You see, we are here for a reason. We are spiritual beings, not animated pieces of meat or bags of chemicals and water who just happen to end up here. We are here so that our Spirit, our Soul can experience and learn and grow. In order to do that, we must be totally free to choose the left fork or the right fork in our life's path. We must be totally free to take just the right action at just the right moment or to do nothing and defer the tough choices out of apathy or fear. We can seize the moment and live life to the fullest or we can imitate the two toed tree sloth and just snooze our way through life, creating nothing and leaving no mark of our passing. Life is all about choice. You and I make hundreds of choices each day. God is always open, always available, you may call on the Father for inspiration or advice but you do not have to listen! Most of us don't! Learning to ask and to listen is one of the great lessons of life.
God loves you so much that like the good human father, he does not try to live your life for you. He makes sure you have all the abilities and tools needed to live the life that you came here to live. That brings us to the next big point. We are not here to all live the same life. Each of us was born with certain set of skills, talents and personality traits that incline us toward one life path or another. Likewise many of us came in with certain challenges or handicaps which we must overcome to be all that we can be. I will use a story from my own life as an illustration.
I was born with cerebral palsy so severe that the Doctor's at the Mayo Clinic recommended that I be institutionalized the rest of my life. They did a lot of institutionalizing in the late 1940's but fortunately my mother would have none of it; she knew that I was not here to shake in a chair in an institution all my days. She was right and I am now as healthy and "normal" as any one you know. How did she assist me in doing this?
Her searching for help led her to Dr. Ernest Holmes and the Science of Mind Philosophy. It was no accident that I was born and raised in Los Angeles, California where so much cutting edge medicine, philosophy, religion, physics and metaphysics takes place and are accepted as a normal part of modern life. What might be "far out" in Dubuque or Indianapolis is commonplace in Los Angeles.
Ernest Holmes did much of his great work in Los Angeles and established the Institute of Religious Science there. Dr. Holmes believed that there are the appearances of your life and then there is the Truth of your being. They are far from the same thing. We in Science of Mind, believe that you are a perfect creation of a perfect God, that you are just who you are supposed to be. We know that what you are experiencing right this minute is a result of a lifetime of thinking, believing, speaking and choosing. No more or less - you are the sum total of your thinking, speaking and choosing.
If you are less than perfect when viewed by others or yourself, it is because you have ceased to believe in the Truth of who you really are, which is an expression of the eternal and almighty God. Your thinking of yourself and others around you creates the reality of your life.
Ernest Holmes opened my dear mother's eyes to the Truth about Dore'. My Truth was not that of a cerebral palsy victim. Oh, we are not in denial, everyone could see my eyes try and fail to focus, my right side shaking uncontrollably but that was a physical condition, not a life sentence. Everything begins in the Mind of God and in our Mind. We know that the Mind has dominion over all over your life - including your body and its condition. Dr. Holmes told my mother that she must see me as whole and well, regardless of what her eyes told her. She must see me as already whole and perfect and must experience the elation that she would feel at my victory over this condition.
Dr. Holmes taught my mother a wonderful tool for life transformation called Spiritual Mind Treatment. It does not treat the body but rather Spiritual Mind Treatment treats the defective beliefs in the Mind that have created the physical defect. When the mental defect or "stinking thinking" as we sometimes call it, is cured so will the be body. You see, the world around you is nothing but a mirror of what is inside of you and that includes the condition of your body.
Spiritual Mind Treatment is a type of prayer but it does not beg for anything, it does not ask anyone or anything outside of us to fix something. What it does is align our Mind with the Mind of God which is perfect and knows only perfection. It then makes a statement of perfection in our life, whether that is about health, finances, love, peace, joy - whatever it is you want more of in your life. You state your desire as already done, being in a state of perfect knowing and trusting that God's Law always works, always acts exactly to create what we are at any given moment in form in our life. You accept your Good, the healing, before it arrives in Form because you trust God to keep His promise. That promise is that what we absolutely believe will be ours. You end your Spiritual Mind Treatment with gratitude to God for being the Power that makes this healing possible and then you release the prayer and give no more thought to it - it is done.
This last part is vital, if your Treatment Work is to have good effect. Once you have done a powerful Treatment then let it go and do not wonder if it is working. Treatment is a lot like a microwave oven. If you keep opening the door, the food never cooks. Trust is the main ingredient in proper Spiritual Mind Treatment.
The Lords Prayer, as it was originally spoken in Aramaic, is a good example of a Spiritual Mind Treatment or an Affirmative Prayer. Jesus repeatedly told us that it is done unto us "as we believed" and as it was in our heart of hearts (the subconscious mind). I have always believed that Jesus was the first great teacher of Science of Mind, although he did not know that we would call these principles by this name. He called his teaching "The Way" which interestingly is what The Tao means in Chinese. A coincidence? I doubt it!
You see, what you are inside is what is responsible for the outward circumstances of your life. Here are two ways we can apply this principle in our lives and in the life of our nations. Many of my readers are from Africa and I say to you, do not look to one of the "Big Men" of the Great Leader tradition for your salvation or for that of your country. Do not look outside yourselves. When you believe that African nations can and must take their place among the first rank of the developed world, then it will happen. When you elect men and women dedicated to improving the lives of every person in your country; not the larger than life men who are used to being above the laws and responsibilities of normal men and who seek their own aggrandizement at the expense of the people, then will you see your lovely lands come into the Light and out of centuries of Darkness and oppression and not one moment before.
When my own nation learns that each country has a right and a duty to create the society that they believe is best for them; as long as they do not seek to impose it on others; then America will have grown up as a nation, at long last. We can and should be an example of freedom and tolerance and can offer the hand of help when asked, but we must never insist that other lands with other traditions live as we do.
Truth is like the center of a city. It does not matter in which way you approach it, we all get to the same place eventually. We must allow others to approach Truth in their way. Our way is a fine way, it has produced a fine way of life for the USA; it may not be to everyone's taste.
When each of us understands that God is there for us as a constant source of information and inspiration then we will never truly be alone again. When we understand that God cares nothing for our religions - they are just our way of explaining God and of celebrating Him; then will we vow to never kill in God's name again. When we learn that true religion is about caring for each other as brothers and sisters of the One Great Mind we call God, Rama, Allah, Jehova, Higher Power or Great Soul because we are literally all ONE; then will we be Spiritual Adults.
We are God having an experience as each of us. I will repeat that - we are not separate from God, we ARE GOD having an experience as us. God loves variety so God encourages us to create any experience we wish to create. Knowing that you are beloved and that you posess all the power of the Universe with which to create the life you want - that idea should drive home the point that Life Is An Inside Job! More on this next time.
May God Be your constant companion and your best friend,
Rev. Dore'
